7 Effective Deeds from the Qur’an and Hadith for Attaining Inner Peace
There are moments in life when everything seems fine externally—prayers are being performed, work is ongoing, relationships are stable—yet an unusual restlessness and unease lingers within. This condition is not always caused by external factors; rather, inner heedlessness and spiritual emptiness often become the root cause. The Qur’an and Hadith guide us that when the heart becomes burdened, certain deeds can revive it and strengthen one’s connection with Allah.
In this context, some important deeds for attaining inner peace are outlined below—
Reciting the Qur’an with understanding The purpose of reciting the Qur’an is not merely verbal recitation, but to comprehend its meaning. Allah says, “This is a blessed Book which We have revealed, so that they may reflect upon its verses.” (Surah Sad — 38:29) When the Qur’an is read with understanding, its verses begin to relate to one’s life, and the layers of heedlessness in the heart gradually diminish.
Remembering death frequently In the busyness of worldly life, people often forget about death, causing the heart to become hardened. For this reason, the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam emphasized remembering death. He said, “Remember often the destroyer of pleasures, meaning death.” (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi — Hadith: 2307) Reflecting on death reduces arrogance and makes a person more conscious of their deeds.
Making regular supplication (du‘a) Supplication keeps the heart connected with Allah and relieves its burdens. Allah says, “Call upon Me; I will respond to you.” (Surah Ghafir — 40:60) This promise reminds us that every call made by a servant is heard by Allah and is never wasted.
Engaging in regular remembrance (dhikr) The remembrance of Allah is a key source of inner tranquility. The Qur’an states, “Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” (Surah Ar-Ra’d — 13:28) Regular dhikr removes restlessness and brings stability to the heart.
Weeping silently in remembrance of Allah Crying in solitude while remembering Allah softens the heart and opens the path to spiritual purification. The Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam said that among the seven types of people who will be shaded under Allah’s Throne on the Day of Judgment is a person who remembers Allah in solitude and weeps. (Sahih Bukhari — Hadith: 660) Such tears emerge from the depths of the heart and strengthen one’s bond with Allah.
Keeping the company of righteous people A person’s heart is influenced by their environment. The Qur’an instructs, “Be with the truthful.” (Surah At-Tawbah — 9:119) Being in the company of righteous individuals increases the inclination toward good deeds and brings positive changes within.
Maintaining restraint in speech and thoughts Restraint in speech and thinking is essential for inner peace. The Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam said, “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.” (Sahih Bukhari — Hadith: 6138) Avoiding unnecessary speech lightens the heart and enhances focus.
These deeds remove heedlessness from the heart, restore spiritual balance, and keep a person steady in the remembrance of Allah. With consistent practice, one begins to feel internal transformation—restlessness is replaced with tranquility, heaviness of the heart turns into lightness, and distance is replaced with a sense of closeness to Allah.
A conscious heart gradually returns to the path of light. And in that journey, these small deeds can become the beginning of profound change—bringing a quiet sense of peace within, even amidst the unrest of the world.
