Differences Between Men and Women in Performing Hajj
Hajj is an important act of worship in Islam, combining both physical and financial aspects. By natural design, there are differences between men and women. As a result, some distinctions are also observed in acts of worship. From the conditions that make Hajj obligatory to the methods of performing it, certain differences exist between men and women.
These differences aim to ensure modesty, safety, and the proper fulfillment of worship according to Islamic guidelines.
Ruling of Traveling with a Mahram For women, the presence of a mahram is essential when traveling for Hajj or Umrah. They must travel with a husband or a male relative whom they can never marry permanently. Even if multiple women travel together, each must have a mahram. However, one man may serve as a mahram for multiple women and travel with them. If necessary, a woman may bear the expenses of her mahram if he is not financially capable.
Method of Reciting Talbiyah Reciting the Talbiyah is an important part of Hajj during the state of Ihram. Men are encouraged to recite it aloud, as this is a Sunnah. In contrast, women should recite it softly or silently to maintain modesty.
عدم Performing Raml in Tawaf During Tawaf, men are recommended to perform “Raml” (walking briskly with slight movement of the shoulders) in the first three circuits. However, this does not apply to women. They should complete all seven rounds at a normal and composed pace, without the need for brisk walking.
Ruling on Cutting Hair (Halq/Taqsir) To exit the state of Ihram, men either shave their heads (Halq) or trim their hair (Taqsir). Women, however, are not permitted to shave their heads. Instead, they cut a small portion of their hair, typically about an inch.
Maintaining Purdah (Modesty) Observing modesty is obligatory for women even during Hajj. While in Ihram, they should cover their faces in a way that maintains modesty. If the cloth touches the face, there is no harm in it. Maintaining proper covering is required during Tawaf and in all situations. The obligation of modesty must not be neglected for the sake of voluntary acts of worship.
Avoiding Crowds Although crowds are common during Hajj, women should prioritize modesty. They are encouraged to stay among other women and avoid unnecessary mixing with men. This helps ensure both safety and proper conduct.
Place and Ruling of Salah In Masjid al-Haram, there are designated areas for women to perform Salah. They should prepare in advance and stay in those areas when prayer time approaches. While congregational prayer is not obligatory for women and praying at home is better for them, if they are in the mosque, they may pray in the designated spaces.
Purity and Tawaf Tawaf is an act of worship that requires purity. Therefore, it cannot be performed in a state of impurity. If a woman is in such a state, she must wait until she is purified before performing Tawaf.
In this way, the distinctions between men and women at different stages of Hajj provide guidance for maintaining proper worship within the boundaries set by Islamic law, while ensuring modesty and discipline.
