Rulings of Qurbani: When It Becomes Obligatory and Upon Whom It Is Required
Qurbani (sacrifice) is an important financial act of worship in Islam, which is made obligatory upon certain Muslims based on specific conditions and timing. It is not merely a ritual; rather, it is a compulsory duty for those who possess the required means according to Islamic law. Through Qurbani, a Muslim not only seeks the pleasure of Allah but also demonstrates their financial capability in practice. Every year, during the month of Dhul-Hijjah, financially सक्षम Muslims sacrifice animals for the sake of Allah.
Importance of Qurbani Qurbani is not just a formality; rather, it is a symbol of obedience and sacrifice to Allah. This act of worship was established in remembrance of the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him). Allah says: “So pray to your Lord and offer sacrifice.” — Surah Al-Kawthar, Ayah 2
Upon Whom Is Qurbani Obligatory? Qurbani becomes obligatory upon a Muslim when the following conditions are fulfilled:
Being a Muslim Qurbani is an act of worship prescribed only for Muslims. It is not obligatory upon non-Muslims.
Being an Adult (Baligh) The ruling of Qurbani applies to a person who has reached puberty.
Being Mentally Sound Qurbani is not obligatory upon a person who is mentally incapable.
Being a Resident (Not a Traveler) Qurbani is not obligatory upon a traveler; rather, it is obligatory upon a resident. In Islamic terminology, a resident is one who is not on a journey and is staying at their home or permanent location.
Possessing Wealth Equal to Nisab If a person owns wealth equal to the nisab threshold after meeting their basic needs, Qurbani becomes obligatory upon them. It is not required to possess nisab for a full year; rather, if a person owns nisab during the days of Qurbani, it becomes obligatory. Even if someone acquires nisab just before sunrise on the 12th of Dhul-Hijjah, Qurbani will still be obligatory upon them.
Nisab Amount: Equivalent to 7.5 tolas of gold or 52.5 tolas of silver.
Time for Qurbani Qurbani can be performed on the 10th, 11th, and 12th of Dhul-Hijjah. If a person possesses nisab during this period, Qurbani becomes obligatory upon them.
How Many Members in a Family Must Perform Qurbani? If multiple family members individually own wealth equal to nisab, Qurbani is obligatory upon each of them separately. One person’s Qurbani does not fulfill the obligation on behalf of others. Therefore, this matter is very important.
Is Qurbani Obligatory Upon Women? If a woman owns wealth that reaches the nisab threshold, Qurbani is also obligatory upon her.
Qurbani for a Person in Debt If a person is in debt and, after repaying it, does not have wealth equal to nisab remaining, then Qurbani is not obligatory upon them.
Is It Sinful to Not Perform Qurbani? A person who has the means but does not perform Qurbani will be sinful.
It is narrated in a hadith: Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Whoever has the means but does not offer sacrifice, let him not come near our place of Eid prayer.” — Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 3123
The core lesson of Qurbani is to develop the mindset of sacrificing what is dear to us for the sake of Allah’s pleasure. It is not limited to the act of slaughtering an animal; rather, it is a practical demonstration of self-sacrifice, piety (taqwa), and sincere obedience. Qurbani reminds us that what reaches Allah is not our outward actions, but the sincerity of our intentions and the taqwa within our hearts.
