Common Mistakes in Hajj and Their Corrections

Hajj is one of the most important acts of worship in Islam, which must be performed in accordance with specific rules, conditions, and the Sunnah. However, due to lack of knowledge, misconceptions, or following common cultural practices, many pilgrims make various mistakes. These errors sometimes diminish the beauty of Hajj and, in some cases, may affect its acceptance. Therefore, to perform Hajj correctly, it is essential to be aware of these common mistakes.

At the very beginning of Hajj, some mistakes are observed regarding intention (niyyah). Some people attempt to change their intention after entering the state of Ihram, or they assume Ihram without properly making the intention. In reality, Ihram is not merely wearing specific clothing; rather, it is a spiritual state entered through intention. Additionally, some individuals fail to enter Ihram before crossing the Miqat, which is considered a serious mistake according to Islamic law.

There are also several common errors related to Ihram. Some people believe that the Ihram garments cannot be changed or that wearing a specific type of footwear is mandatory. In fact, it is permissible to change Ihram clothing within the limits allowed by Shariah. Similarly, avoiding the use of scented products is an important requirement that is often neglected. Lack of proper knowledge in these matters can affect the validity and quality of the worship.

Behavioral mistakes during Hajj are another significant concern. Despite the sanctity of the time and place, some pilgrims push others in crowds, cause harm, or engage in unnecessary disputes. However, patience, tolerance, and good conduct toward others are fundamental aspects of the spirit of Hajj. Even harming plants is prohibited, which highlights how serious it is to harm fellow human beings.

There are also misconceptions surrounding the Ka‘bah. Some people consider touching or wiping its walls or holding onto its door as acts of special virtue, although these practices are not established in Shariah. Similarly, in the plain of ‘Arafah, many gather around Jabal al-Rahmah, considering it especially sacred and directing their supplications toward it, which is not in accordance with the Sunnah.

Mistakes are also observed regarding staying at different locations during Hajj. Some pilgrims neglect to stay in Mina or fail to remain there for the prescribed duration. Others leave ‘Arafah before sunset, which goes against Islamic guidelines. Likewise, errors occur in matters of prayer; although prayers are shortened (qasr) in Mina, they are not combined, yet many fail to follow this rule.

During the visit to Madinah, some theological mistakes also occur. Some individuals make supplications at graves or seek help from them, which contradicts the core beliefs of Islam. Supplication should be directed only to Allah, and neglecting this principle undermines the essence of worship.

Even after returning from Hajj, certain incorrect behaviors are noticed. Some people assume that once Hajj is performed, all past sins are forgiven and that they can continue committing sins without consequence. However, one of the signs of an accepted Hajj is a positive transformation in a person’s life and a conscious effort to avoid sin. Others show excessive interest in being called “Haji” or return home wearing Ihram garments, which may cause unnecessary hardship and sometimes lead to showing off (riya).

Overall, many of the mistakes in Hajj arise from ignorance, misconceptions, or baseless cultural practices. To avoid these, it is essential to acquire authentic knowledge, follow the Sunnah, and remain conscious of the true purpose of Hajj—seeking the pleasure of Allah.
